- Star Tribune, December 7, 2011 – 8:07 PM
The off-leash romping area will be at a Park Board facility in south Minneapolis.
More than a year after controversy erupted over a proposal to create an off-leash dog park in Martin Luther King Park, a south Minneapolis spot for a new dog park has finally been approved. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board voted Wednesday to accept the recommendation made by a citizen committee to convert part of the board’s South Side operations center parking lot in the west corner of Lyndale Farmstead Park into the off-leash dog park. The vote was seven in favor, with one member abstaining and another absent. It would be the first off-leash park in the park system’s sixth district;

Amendment Would Save Crime-Stoppers
Filed Under crime | Leave a Comment
Two specialists are slated for layoffs under the proposed budget.
Southwest Minneapolis might keep two of its most critical police resources, after all.
Southwest’s City Councilmember Betsy Hodges (Ward 13) has proposed to fund the Crime Prevention Specialists with leftover money from the Police Department’s 2010-2011 contingency fund. The full council is expected to approve the amendment, passed Tuesday by the Council’s budget and taxes committee. Crime Prevention Specialists Amy Lavender and Chelsea Adams toil away in relative obscurity for the residents of the Fifth Precinct. Until, that is, a wave of crime hits, a mobile drug-dealing operation starts cruising a neighborhood, or a block’s rental house starts to become a problem property. At those moments, all the anonymous work the pair puts in comes to the fore: organizing block clubs, working hand-in-glove with residents to track public safety issues block-by-block, and keeping the department’s busy officers appraised of what’s going on in the precinct.

Local author brings vampires to Christmas

Nothing frightening about holiday book for kids
By Josh Wolanin, Southwest Journal
Jeff Berg [Kingfield resdient] meditated on this question after his 5-year-old daughter, Eda, posed it one Christmas morning: If vampires are up all night, how do they receive presents on Christmas?
“I thought it was the most brilliant question ever asked,” Berg, the creative director at Olson, the local advertising firm, said.
He immediately set out to work on the book that would become “Mrs. Claus & the Batty Christmas.” Each three of the four little vampires in the book share strong resemblances to Berg’s three children, which makes sense, since they helped on the design.
