Thanks to a graffiti prevention grant from the City of MPLS Solid Waste and Recycling, the Kingfield Neighborhood will be seeing a new mural begin on the soundwall of 40th Street and Stevens Avenue. The mural will be painted and then installed on the section just north of the pedestrian bridge and will serve as a gateway into the neighborhood. Kingfield is excited to welcome artists Greta McLain and Silvia Ibáñz to our community leading this project!
Mural Description (summary):
The murals together show the activity in the community and the coming together and celebration of different people, different activities and different races. Various images are pulled from the “vision statements†collected in the community last year that asked what people like about the neighborhood. These include bikes, veggies from the market, cafes with people enjoying each other’s company, children playing, dogs being walked, and flowers. Other symbols came from what the artists hear underneath what people are saying is important. This includes the image of Dr. King and the community effort it took to realize his dream symbolized in the image of a march, the inclusion of faces from the community of people of different ages, the butterfly which symbolizes both the Latino community and also freedom (that of migration and crossing of boundaries). The background colors come from quilting patterns.
