Here is a general update of the Ways & Means Committee actions last night – thank you for engaging on these critical budget issues and the importance of crime prevention specialists to public safety work in Minneapolis.

Thank you for contacting me about the City’s 2010 budget, and specifically the need to maintain our crime prevention specialist program as part of the police department.  I agree this is a priority for our city.

It was just this Monday that Chief Dolan announced he would cut crime prevention specialists as one strategy to meet the police department’s ongoing large structural deficit.  Last night, in a meeting that lasted until 10:30 pm, the council Ways & Means committee (I’m on this committee) identified dedicated funding for crime prevention specialists for 2010 – replacing almost all of the funding for this program.  We also made several cuts to other departments to save firefighter jobs and police jobs for the future.   I believe our focus on preserving public safety services was the right thing to do among many tough choices.

The other major action taken by the budget committee was to approve a property tax levy reduction from 11% to 7% to reflect reduced city pension obligations due to a recent court decision that the pension funds were overcharging the city.

The full Council is scheduled to adopt the 2010 budget on Monday, December 7, at 6:05 pm.
