Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. The average number of home fires on Thanksgiving Day is normally double the average number of fires in homes on any other day!
Stay safe by incorporating these tips and safe habits:
- Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking – frying, broiling, or boiling. Set a timer to remind you to check on your cooking!
- Make your cooking area safe. Move things that can burn away from the stove.
- Use the back burners first, and turn pot handles toward the back so they can’t be bumped.
- Stay awake and alert while cooking. Set a timer for foods that take longer to cook, such as the turkey!
- Prevent burns by wearing short sleeves, or by rolling them up. Use potholders and oven mitts.
- Keep young children away from the stove – 3 big steps is a good rule!
Using a Turkey Fryer?
- Use extra caution, and know how to use a turkey fryer safely before using one at all!
- Remember to use a dry, thawed turkey – a wet or frozen turkey will cause the oil to splatter or even explode.
- Don’t use too much oil – leave room for the turkey – the oil level will rise up, and spill up if there is too much.
- Use a thermostat to control the temperature of the oil, if possible.
- Use protective equipment such as oven mitts and potholders, as the side, lid, and handles of the fryer can get very hot.
- Use the turkey fryer outside if possible, and make sure it’s attended by an adult at all times.
- Never use a propane or gas fryer inside the house.

And remember to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home, as well as inside every bedroom, and a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector within 10 feet of every bedroom.
