Nicollet Square Construction, 3700 Nicollet

Nicollet Square will be a 42 unit option for youth (18-22 years) who are transitioning out of homelessness or foster care into independence.  Nicollet Square will be their first rental home, and Kingfield their first community as a young adult working toward self-sufficiency.  The facility will provide on-site employment services and independent living support for tenants, as well as retail and office space for the community. Construction on the building began in March 2010 and is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

Nicollet Avenue Construction, 31st to 40th Street

The Nicollet Avenue Construction Steering Committee is being organized by the Lyndale and Kingfield Neighborhood Associations in partnership with the City of Minneapolis in order to ensure the community is involved in the planning and construction process for the design and reconstruction of Nicollet Avenue.  The purpose of the Steering Committee is to be the connection between the community and the design process, and to solicit and organize input from community members, property owners, business owners and managers, and other users of the Nicollet Corridor. The Steering Committee will help shepherd the project through the planning and construction process and strive to be honest brokers between the different ideas and interests for the project.  Additionally they will work to identify and communicate ways to support businesses and residents who will be impacted during the construction.

The Steering Committee will host the first public meeting in late May concerning the Nicollet Avenue Reconstruction.  The purpose of that meeting is to gather input from residents and business owners about the avenue’s issues and each person’s vision for the future Nicollet.  Nicollet property owners and tenants will receive an invitation to this meeting once the date and location are set.  The Steering Committee hopes you will give us your input on this incredibly important community project throughout the process. Nicollet Storefront Spiff-Up

KFNA is working with the 5th Precinct over the next few weeks to spiff-up storefronts along Nicollet to increase window visibility for both safety and store appearance.  The City ordinances require at least 30% of each non-residential building façade include windows; these windows cannot be blocked by exterior window coverings, signs, mechanical equipment or shelving between 4 and 7 feet, nor can any individual window be covered by more than 30% signage.  Window signs also count against the permanent sign area allowed for a building.  KFNA will be helping businesses understand this ordinance and the reasoning behind it, and encouraging them to be compliant.  Outreach will begin this week.  Questions should be sent to Michael Wee at Michael.Wee@ci.minneapolis.mn.us (612) 673.5468.
