Solarize Kingfield Phase I

Please note: The first phase of this project ended October 2011–read a Case Study of the project by MetroCerts!

Solarize Kingfield Phase I was a solar installation program for local businesses and institutions, led by KFNA. We helped businesses and institutions interested in installing up to 40 kW solar electric systems to simplify the process and reduce the cost of adding solar.

This work was supported by a grant from the City of Minneapolis. We started with two pilot sites, one of which, Quality Coaches, has installed 25 kW of solar PV with battery backup. Another site, Twin Town Guitars, installed 28 kW of solar PV.

May 24, 2011 Workshop resources Presentation on Solar PV for Commercial Buildings: Kingfield Solar PV Presentation. See below for resources & opportunities for businesses & organizations to improve energy efficiency.

Cost: For a solar electric system, the cost depends on the size of the system and the ease of installation. Before incentives and tax credits, typical costs range from $6.50–$9.00 for each watt of capacity. Incentives and tax credits (see below) can cover more than 60% of the cost in some cases. A typical profitable business can see installation costs recouped in 5-7 years. Your solar installer should be able to assist you in identifying ROI based on your specific situation.

KFNA has established a short list of partnering solar PV installers for Solarize Kingfield. These partner installers are helping us in our efforts to simplify the process, by sharing their expertise and providing feedback and input at each step as we develop and implement our program.

Our partnering solar PV installers were Solarflow Energy, Applied Energy Innovations, Sundial Solar, andInnovative Power Systems. Click here to learn more about our partnering installers.
