Supportive housing for homeless youth is clearly needed now more than ever.  A 39% rise in homeless youth was documented by the recent 2009 Wilder Homeless Survey, which was just released.   On a single day in October, 1,207 youth (age 21 and younger) on their own were homeless, up from 867 in 2006.   We know that these numbers actually represent young people we’ve become acquainted with who have dreams and hopes—young people like Tottiana, Jasmine, Francisco.  74% of the youth have been homeless before, experiencing their first bout of homelessness at age 15.  24% of these youth slept outside, in a car, or in an abandoned building at least one night in October.

Thanks to your support and the support of our congregational partners, Westminster Presbyterian Church and Plymouth Congregational Church, things will be a little bit better by the end of the year.  I am pleased to announce that with the early spring thaw, Plymouth Church Neighborhood Foundation has begun construction of Nicollet Square, a 42 unit supportive housing and retail complex for homeless youth and youth aging out of foster care.  By December,  the first youth will be arriving to a place of their own, supported by services and employment opportunities.  Read more

The Minneapolis Planning Commission followed with its approval in September of that year.

The project was delayed while PCNF worked to secure $9.2 million in private and public financing, accomplished in part through federal

As far as an update, the building is gone.  The last of it was demolished about noon Wednesday.  I spoke with my general contractor and understand that the work of hauling away the debris and removing the footings will go into next week.

Post completion of the demolition, and until commencement of construction of the new building, I’m planning to leave the chain link construction fence around the demolition site.  We’ll also continue hiring the service which removes snow and maintains the site.
