Hennepin County is closing the Lyndale Avenue Bridge to traffic beginning Tuesday, Jan. 17, which is two weeks earlier than originally planned. The closure is scheduled to last through October of this year while the new bridge is being constructed. During the closure a signed detour will be in place.

East and west bound Minnehaha Parkway will remain open during the bridge construction project. Bike and pedestrian paths along Minnehaha Creek will also remain open, except for the trail portion under the bridge, which is currently closed and will remain so until the bridge is complete.

The Lyndale Avenue Bridge reconstruction will include the traffic lanes, improved intersection controls, sidewalks, ornamental railings, lighting, and the pedestrian and bicycle access paths that connect Minnehaha Creek and the Parkway. Any trees, vegetation or signage disturbed during construction will be replaced.

Minneapolis Public Works is gearing up to conduct its 5th annual Pedestrian and Bicycle Count, and you can volunteer to help. Volunteers will be asked to count the number of pedestrians and bicyclists at several locations around the city. The main days for counting will be Tuesday, September 13 and Wednesday, September 14, although other days are available. Most of our counts are conducted from 4-6pm, however there are shifts throughout the day at select locations.

Minneapolis Public Works conducts pedestrian and bicyclist counts in order to understand the impact of non-motorized travel on streets, sidewalks, and bike paths. Accurate counts enable the City to plan and build for pedestrians and bicyclists, while tracking what’s successful and what should be done differently.
If you’re interested in volunteering, register online or contact Simon Blenski at simon.blenski@minneapolismn.gov or 612-275-6754.  To learn more, visit our count home page to view traffic flow maps and the annual count report.

Please join City of Minneapolis Public Works staff and Councilmember Elizabeth Glidden to discuss options for improving pedestrian/bicyclist safety and traffic calming at 2nd Avenue and 40th Street (the entrance to the pedestrian bridge across I-35W).  Read more about the project here.

Tuesday, March 1st
6:30 – 8 pm
Dr Martin Luther King Park Recreation Center
4055 Nicollet Avenue South

Public Works Engineer Jack Yuzna will present options for improving the physical infrastructure near the entrance to the pedestrian bridge across I-35W.  Options include a raised crosswalk (like a speed bump) or versions of a bumpout that extends the sidewalk on the west side of 2nd Avenue.

Please note that 2nd Avenue will be resurfaced during the 2011 construction season, from just north of 32nd Street to 34th Street and 37th Street to 42nd Street.  Residents will receive separate notice of a community meeting in May regarding the resurfacing project and public hearing for assessments.   More information on resurfacing of 2nd Avenue is available at http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/cip/2ndAveS-resurface/index.asp.

2010 has been a year of accomplishments for bicycling in Minneapolis.  The Cedar Lake Trail, one of the few remaining gaps in the off-street bike path system, is nearing completion.  Construction began on Minneapolis’ first bicycle boulevard.  Nice Ride Minnesota launched bike sharing with 700 bicycles at 65 locations.  And ten miles of street were improved for bicycling.

To learn more view an interactive map of new and improved 2010 bikeways (pdf).  You can also visit our new projects website and track the growth of bikewaysover the past decade.

Also, Nice Ride Minnesota is beginning a planning process to expand bike sharing.  Two workshops will be held for the public to share where they would like to see more bike sharing stations.  The first meeting will be in Northeast Minneapolis on Tuesday, November 9th, from 6:30 to 8 pm in the Northrup King Building (1500 Jackson St NE, Suite 314).  The second meeting will be held on Thursday, November 11th, from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Freewheel Midtown Bike Center (2834 10thAvenue S).
