Join your neighbors for a Fall meet & greet at MLK Park!

bonfireWarm up with us on Saturday, November 14, 7-9 pm at MLK Park. We’ll have a bonfire and hot cider; you bring an item to donate to the food shelf. [The park has agreed to waive the staffing fee if we help with their food drive in this time of need.] Bring fixings for s’mores and a chair if you want.

No agenda, just a chance to relax and connect. Bring a neighbor–all ages are welcome!

Hosted by the KFNA Crime Prevention and Safety Committee.

The residents of the 4200 block of Garfield Avenue South in the Kingfield neighborhood are organizing a benefit to raise money to help pay the medical bills incurred by five-year-old Gabriel Grieling after being run over by a Minneapolis school bus on February 25, 2009.  Up until the day before the accident Gabriel and his mother were living on our block with his paternal grandparents Ralph and Linda Grieling. We are a close-knit block and are coming together as a community in order to help the Greiling family.

Garfield resident Kevin Kling, who is a nationally recognized playwright and storyteller best known for his commentary on the NPR show All Things Considered will be headlining the show.  Also on the bill are next-door neighbors Rosie Cole and Lloyd Brant who are best known for their popular comedy act The Wacky Chicken Show. Kevin, Rosie and Lloyd will lead an impressive line-up of entertainment that are coming together for the Gabriel Grieling Benefit.

With Sincere Thanks,
The Neighbors of the 4200 Garfield Ave. So.

5th Precinct Block Leader Training and Networking
Tuesday May 12th
6:30-8 pm Training for new block leaders
8-9 pm Current block leaders share stories, ideas, network with others
5th Precinct, 3101 Nicollet Ave

Becoming a block leader is a great way to get involved with your community and your block– and remember, the best defense against crime is a connected block with neighbors looking out for each other. The training is informal and we encourage more than one representative per block to attend. Revised Crime Prevention Resource Manuals provided.

For questions or to RSVP, contact CPS Amy Lavender at amy.lavender@ci.minneapolis.mn.us or 612.673.5407. Walk-ins are also welcome.

The Minneapolis Police Department will be presenting the 10th Annual Building Blocks and 8th Annual Theresa S. Ruhland Awards tonight.  The Ruhland Award honors a Minneapolis reisident volunteer who does an outstanding job of getting youths involved in the community.

The Building Blocks awards are given to block clubs that are the city’s most active and effective. Two Kingfield block clubs are among the eleven chosen for the awards this year: 4200 Garfield and West-of-King block clubs.

Thank you for helping promote the 2008 (and 25th Annual) National Night Out. Your group’s support was an important part of NNO. I’m happy to report that we had an outstanding NNO this year. Citywide, results included:

· At least 1111 separate, mostly small events.
· More than 62,000 participants (16.4% of the City’s population).
· Participation from blocks in 82 of 83 residential neighborhoods.
· Events on 216 blocks that that didn’t host NNO in 2007.
· 967 pre-NNO planning meetings.
· Collaboration with United Way, which resulted in food collection at 288 or more NNO events.
· Support (often increased) from returning local sponsors Minnesota Twins, Nickelodeon Universe MOA, Qwest, Target and KFAI Radio.
· Assistance from new local sponsors AAA, Minnesota Crime Prevention Association, Litin and MTN.
· Significant contributions from Holiday Stationstores, Roundy’s/Rainbow Foods, General Mills Foundation, The Shout! House and Castle Building and Remodeling.

National Night Out’s impact lasts far longer than one evening in Minneapolis. By bringing neighbors together block by block, NNO helps make a year-round difference in creating community, reducing fear, building leadership and improving safety.

Thanks again for getting helping out! By the way, the 2009 Minneapolis National Night Out is Tuesday, August 4.

August 5 is National Night Out and the deadline for free street closure for block parties is July 22nd, so make sure you don’t miss it!  If you forget to register your party by then, you’ll have to pay $100 for the street to close.  Follow this link for details on NNO.
