* First, we’re happy to announce that the MPD’s Citizens Academy has been set for 2012. We are now accepting applications. We are giving priority seating to the full Academy for Neighborhood Policing Plan (NPP) leaders. Academy graduates are up-to-speed on how the MPD works, and how we can grow our partnership–the ultimate experience for those looking to prevent and reduce crime neighborhood-wide. See the brief list of our expectations of NPP leaders, and the benefits to you and your neighborhood, in the application form. If you are, or can commit to be, your neighborhood’s primary leader for executing the policing plan, fill out the application below–your application for the full Academy will move to the front of the line! If you are not your neighborhood’s NPP leader, please pass this invitation on to your neighborhood crime prevention leaders ASAP. More than one NPP leader can apply; however space for the full Academy is limited to 40 seats. Two or more can select different sets of sessions to fill one slot.
* Second, we’ve simplified the Neighborhood Policing Plan process. As always, your Crime Prevention Specialist will be your prime resource to devise and implement your plan. Plans posted on-line will be updated periodically–they won’t be “annual,” they’ll be a “living document” based on your regular feedback regarding your neighborhood leaders’ and volunteers’ activities, and the MPD’s implementation of crime prevention partnership strategies listed in the plan. Once we have your point person or leader signed up for the Academy, we can begin updating your NPP on-line.
* Lastly, we have set a goal to reach the goal of 90% of Minneapolis’ blocks organized by a committed block club leader by the end of 2014. We just passed the half-way point, and would like to get ahead of schedule. We are offering priority seating to expanded sessions of the Academy for leaders taking on previously unorganized blocks. We’ll continue to work with your crime prevention committee to recruit new leaders. And we are issuing this “Neighborhood Policing Plan Challenge”: When your neighborhood reaches or exceeds 90% of your blocks organized by committed crime prevention block club leaders, any crime alert subscriber in the neighborhood can opt-in to the Action Alerts.
If you are our “go-to” person for your neighborhood’s policing plan, just hit reply, and fill out the application form below.  The Academy will run from March 14 through May 16, 2012–all Wednesday evenings–Academy topics schedule follows the application form. We’ll need all applications submitted by February 28.
We look forward to continuing this vital partnering and seeing you at the Citizens Academy!  If you have any questions about the Academy, the Neighborhood Policing Plans, or the Action Alerts, don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks!
