Ward 8 Information Session Hosted by Councilperson Elizabeth Glidden Regarding Various Proposed Minneapolis Park & Recreation Funding Proposals

Tuesday, April 12th, evening

Sabathani Center, 310 East 38th Street, Room J, Minneapolis

With the participation of Ward 8 neighborhoods Bancroft, Bryant, Central, Field, Regina, Northrop, Kingfield, and Lyndale.

Join Council Member Elizabeth Glidden, City Finance Staff and your neighbors for a discussion of proposals that have been made in recent weeks to fund park infrastructure, including funding options and impacts.

Three proposals for funding Minneapolis Parks have been introduced publicly:

  • Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board’s Referendum Proposal, which would provide $15million per year for 20 years
  • Proposal by Council Members Barb Johnson and Lisa Goodman, that includes a guaranteed minimum of $10.5 million per year for 20 years, a $3 million per year increase in operating revenue, and one time funding of $1.5 million. Potential funding sources and impacts of this proposal are yet to be discussed by the City Council.
  • Proposal by Mayor Hodges and John Quincy, for $300 million over 10 years in parks and city roads capital investment. The proposal would fund, annually, $10 million in park capital maintenance and $20 in roads maintenance, and result in a levy increase of 1.4% per year.

Many residents have contacted me to express support for our world-class park system, and I believe that the funding needs for maintaining park infrastructure are real. Outstanding questions still must be addressed and publicly reviewed, including identifying financial impacts and trade-offs if a special funding stream is dedicated to the Park Board for a period of 20 years. Impacts on other city funding priorities are also important to understand, such as the City’s infrastructure maintenance gap for streets and roads.

The City Council may be asked to vote on the Johnson/Goodman proposal as soon as mid-April, and your feedback is important. Please send questions or comments to Elizabeth at (612) 673-2208 or elizabeth.glidden@minneapolismn.gov.

The Johnson/Goodman proposal is scheduled for a public hearing at the City Council’s Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, April 13, 10:00 am, at City Hall, 350 South 5th Street, Room 317 (Council Chambers).

Celebrate Earth Day at MLK Park with a Park Clean-Up, Compost Lesson, & Fix-it Clinic!

Saturday, April 23rd, 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM

MLK Park, 4055 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis

Three ways to Get Involved!

Between 9:30 AM and 12 noon, and check in at the registration table. A site coordinator will provide you with gloves (if you need them, or you may want to bring your own) and bags, and will instruct you on where to pick up and where to leave trash.

OR...you can also bring your own plastic bag and walk FROM your house TO the Park and collect whatever trash you find on the way—leaving it with the Staff at the Park so we are sure to weigh it with all the other “goodies” collected so we get an accurate total of the clean-up effort! You could do this on your way to either of these other two events!

Between 11 AM- 2 PM, Minneapolis Solid Waste & Recycling staff will be on-site to answer your questions and help sort items into garbage, recycling, and organics recycling containers. They will have an organics display, as well as free stickers and kitchen pails to those who sign up to participate in the organics program! They’ll also be able to help you determine what other materials you can divert for recycling through drop-off programs from your home.

Lastly, from 12 noon to 4 PM….Toaster won't toast? Lamp won’t light? Pants need mending? The Fix-It Clinic helps residents return broken household appliances and clothing to usable condition. With free help from skilled volunteers, residents get assistance with disassembling, troubleshooting, and fixing their items, while learning new skills and gaining empowerment.

Are you a “fixer”? Volunteer fixers are always needed! Volunteers have skills in soldering, electronics and electrical repair, computer repair, sewing, or general tinkering, and have a strong desire to teach people. To volunteer contact nancy.lo@hennepin.us or at 612-348-9195.

Nicollet Avenue Public Art Community Mosaic Workshops

Saturday, April 30th & Saturday, May 7th, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM (you do not need to attend both)

MLK Park, 4055 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis

It’s spring, and birds are popping up on Nicollet –bird sculptures, that is.

  • Workshops will be limited to 32 participants each; call or email KFNA at 612.823.5980 or info@kingfield.org to reserve your place at the table!
  • Children as young as 6 are welcome, but each youth 12 or younger must be accompanied by an adult who also participates in the workshop.

As part of the City of Minneapolis’ Art in Public Places program, Twin Cities artists Ben Janssens and Marjorie Pitz, with input from a neighborhood public art committee, designed art for the 10-block stretch of reconstructed Nicollet from Lake Street to 40th Street. Gateway sculptures with an aviary theme can be seen at 40th and 36th streets, and sculptural bird stools and benches are being installed at six locations this spring.

These benches and stools on Nicollet are not yet complete, however; as part of the design the birds’ wings have been left blank, for community members to fill in. Mosaic artist Lori Greene has been working with students at Ramsey Middle School to create designs for the wings, and she will be running two community workshops where participants will transform these designs into colorful mosaic wings.

PorchFest 2016!

Thursday, June 16th, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Attention neighbors, musicians, and porch owners!

This is a call to SAVE THE DATE for Kingfield PorchFest! Last year, this first-time event took the neighborhood by storm, featuring over 40 musical performances on 25 Kingfield stages! The weather near solstice was gorgeous, the music was resplendent, and attendees and musicians alike were giddy with excitement to see and hear the talent of their neighbors in their very own neighborhood.

For anyone who missed this event last year and is wondering, “What is PorchFest?”--PorchFest is an evening of music, walking, and summer. On a single summer evening, musicians will perform acoustic music at their respective homes or at a porch location donated by a neighbor, while others stroll through the neighborhood, enjoying the sounds.

We have a need for musicians, amateur and professional, and for porch venues. If you are willing to perform music, provide a porch, or both, please utilize the online application form that will help us match musicians with hosts and porches, to better coordinate, map, and promote the sounds of the evening!

Sign up as a Musician or Host (or BOTH!) here!

Questions? Contact KFNA Executive Director, Sarah Linnes-Robinson at sarah@kingfield.org or 612.823.5980.
