Nicollet Avenue Public Art Community Mosaic Workshops
Saturday, May 7th, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
MLK Park, 4055 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis
Register here!
More details here!
- Workshops will be limited to 32 participants each; call or email KFNA at 612.823.5980 or info@kingfield.org to reserve your place at the table!
- Children as young as 6 are welcome, but each youth 12 or younger must be accompanied by an adult who also participates in the workshop.
As part of the City of Minneapolis’ Art in Public Places program, Twin Cities artists Ben Janssens and Marjorie Pitz, with input from a neighborhood public art committee, designed art for the 10-block stretch of reconstructed Nicollet from Lake Street to 40th Street. Gateway sculptures with an aviary theme can be seen at 40th and 36th streets, and sculptural bird stools and benches are being installed at six locations this spring.
These benches and stools on Nicollet are not yet complete, however; as part of the design the birds’ wings have been left blank, for community members to fill in. Mosaic artist Lori Greene has been working with students at Ramsey Middle School to create designs for the wings, and she will be running two community workshops where participants will transform these designs into colorful mosaic wings.

West 46th Street Proposed Bike Lanes, Public Open House for Kingfield and Tangletown Neighbors
Wednesday, May 11th, 6:00 PM - 6:50 PM (immediately before KFNA Board Meeting)
MLK Park, 4055 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis
The format of this informational meeting will be an “open house” style where folks can come and view the exhibits and the County / City staff will be available for individual questions and discussion. There will be a handout summarizing the project and its schedule and a large layout on hand for folks to review. County Staff will be available to answer questions or accept comments at any time prior or after these neighborhood meetings.
Project Background: Hennepin County plans on paving 46th Street from Lyndale Avenue to Cedar Avenue late this summer. This project provides an opportunity to reconfigure the striping in order to encourage slower speeds and to improve the overall clarity for vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle travel. The levels of congestion and delay are predicted to remain similar to what is experienced today. 46th Street currently carries about 8,000 – 10,000 vehicles per day between Lyndale and Nicollet Avenues which is adequately handled by the existing 2-lane design. The morning rush hour is about 8% of the daily volumes and the evening rush hour is about 10%. Between Lyndale and Nicollet Avenues, the proposed configuration would stripe the north side parking lane and add bike lanes. Parking would generally be prohibited on the south side of the street with the possible exception near the business node at Grand Avenue. After the changes are made, County and City staff will be monitoring the operations and are prepared to modify the design if conditions warrant.

KFNA Board Meeting: Meet Artist Seitu Jones - selected for 40th Street Pedestrian Bridge Railing Project
Wednesday, May 11th, 7:00 PM
MLK Park, 4055 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis
Artist Seitu Jones has been selected to design the railing for the new 40th Street Pedestrian Bridge which will span I-35W at 40th Street. This bridge will serve pedestrians and bicyclists and link the east and west sections of the River Lake Greenway. The railing project was selected for Art in Public Places—the City’s percent for art program—by the Public Art Advisory Panel from the City’s Capital Improvement Program. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) is the lead agency on this project and the City is working in partnership with them on the bridge.
Jones’ application shared his interest in connecting public art design with neighborhood identity. As he stated in his application, “I aspire to create artwork that honors and inspires communities. Typically, my designs are informed by and recall elements of the social and natural context of a site and the surrounding neighborhoods. If selected to create art for the 40th Street Pedestrian Bridge, these principles will inspire my work.” For more information about this project, contact Mary Altman at mary.altman@minneapolismn.gov.
Visit the KFNA Board Meeting in May to share your ideas and vision for this important environmental and cultural connection between neighborhoods, as well as a visible marker of our City to those passing under it on the highway. Follow KFNA’s FB page and/or KFNA's web site to find out how the community can continue beyond this meeting to give Seitu feedback and direction on the artistic design and feel of this important bridge.

PorchFest 2016!
Thursday, June 16th, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Attention neighbors, musicians, and porch owners! Sign up as a Musician or Host (or BOTH!) here!
For anyone who missed this event last year and is wondering, “What is PorchFest?”--PorchFest is an evening of music, walking, and summer. On a single summer evening, musicians will perform acoustic music at their respective homes or at a porch location donated by a neighbor, while others stroll through the neighborhood, enjoying the sounds.
We have a need for musicians, amateur and professional, and for porch venues. If you are willing to perform music, provide a porch, or both, please utilize the online application form that will help us match musicians with hosts and porches, to better coordinate, map, and promote the sounds of the evening!
Questions? For more info visit here, or contact KFNA Executive Director, Sarah Linnes-Robinson at sarah@kingfield.org or 612.823.5980.

Little Kids Soccer Program at MLK Park
Saturdays, 10:00 AM – 11:15 AM, June 18th through August 13th
MLK Park, 4055 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis
COME PLAY WITH YOUR KIDS
Come play "Space Monkeys" with your 4-year-old. How about "Buffalo Hunter" with your 7-year-old. When was the last time you danced the "Hoky Poky" or played "Duck,Duck, Gray Duck"? Come to King Park's Little Kids Soccer Program on Saturdays, 10-11:15AM, June 18th through August 13th (we'll skip July 2nd), and play little kid games with a soccer ball.
Come when you're in town. Don't fret if you're out of town a session or two. We don't form teams for the season. We group the kids 4's, 5-6's, 7-8's, and 9-10's each week and play.
Sign-up on the Mpls Park Board web site (Summer Recreation, Youth, Search under "Little Kickers" [that's what the Park Board calls us] [hopefully they will remove the "cancelled" from our program this week]); or sign-up any Saturday morning at the field starting June 18th. Look for Sharon at the registration and name tape table along 42nd Street near baseball field #1, you generally can't miss all of the yellow T-Shirts. Cost is $20, which includes the T-shirt.
The "big people" (sometimes known as parents) can just join in and play in many of the games, or you can be one of the parent-coaches (we dearly love you!) that takes the training on Thursday June 9th (6-7:30PM) or Saturday June 11th (10-11:30AM) in the little kid games. Please call if you want to be one of the proud parent-coaches wearing our black, ML King Park, soccer coach T-shirts. Very cool they are!
For information: call Michael Vanderford at 612/ 296-96467.
