Playground Ribbon Cutting and Community Celebration

Saturday, August 22nd, 10:30 AM - 4:00 PM

MLK Park, 4055 Nicollet Avenue South, Minneapolis

On August 22, 2015 our beloved community will cut the ribbon and celebrate the grand opening of the first African-American inventors & civil rights-themed playground in the country. The playground is in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Minneapolis at 4055 Nicollet Avenue South. The ribbon-cutting will be preceded by a march, rally, and program, and will be followed by entertainment and all kinds of fun activities at the park. Please join us for any or all of the day!

Saturday August 22 Schedule

  • 10:30am GATHER at the east parking lot of Sabathani Community Center (310 East 38th St.)
  • 11:00am RALLY at Sabathani and line up for the march (van/bus seating available)
  • NOON MARCH from Sabathani to the park (distance is just under 3/4 mile, or about 30 minutes)
  • 1:00pm LISTEN as we are welcomed to the park with drumming, ritual, and words of inspiration
  • 1:30pm CELEBRATE as the playground is opened with a formal ribbon-cutting
  • 2:00-4:00pm ENJOY free entertainment, games, exhibitors, an art sale benefitting the park, food and ice cream for sale, face painting, and more fun for all ages

We regret to inform you that this event has been cancelled because our Community Garden Coordinator, who plans and leads this fundraising event, has been dealing with the tragic assault on her step-son in the recent biking accident caused by a person throwing concrete from a moving car. KFNA Seeking Volunteers for Various Neighborhood Activities including muscle to move materials and start digging for the Kingfield Community Outdoor Bread Oven!

KFNA Seeking Volunteers:

  • General laborers (digging, material moving, cement pouring) to prep the pad for the Kingfield Community Bread Oven, beginning possibly as soon as August 21 and continuing into the next week—Contact sarah@kingfield.org to get specifics including dates and times as they are set!
  • Street Captains Need during Nicollet Open Streets, Sunday Sept 20, Many Shifts 11 AM to 5 PM – Visit here or contact aryca@lyndale.org.
  • A Neighbor with Knowledge of Fruit Tree Trimming or Espalier Experience to Help Train Gardeners to Care for an Apple Tree at the Community Garden
  • Photographers/Multi-Media Gurus: Nicollet Open Streets Event and Bread Oven Construction Project

The Kingfield Neighborhood Association (KFNA) manages this List for the purpose of informing neighbors of events and issues that directly affect Kingfield neighborhood. This list is never shared nor sold to any other organizations. Kingfield is defined as 35W to Lyndale Avenue South and from 36th Street through 46th Street. All List recipients are invited to share neighborhood news with other members by sending messages to sarah@kingfield.org ; please indicate in the subject line that it is a message for the Kingfield E-mail List. All messages submitted by members for consideration of inclusion on the List must include complete contact information including name, phone, and email address. All messages will be screened and no partisan political messages will be posted. Ballot initiatives are not considered partisan political activity, and are permitted activities under KFNA's 501(c)(3) tax status.

The List Administrator will make the final decision as what information is posted to the Kingfield E-mail List and maintains the right to edit all messages. Many messages concerning neighborhood issues or questions we will simply answer directly, rather than posting to the entire list. Notices may also, or instead, at List Administrator's discretion be posted on the KFNA website
