Head on down to the market for a morning of delicious food and fun! The early spring this year means the veggies are already popping up. Fill your shopping bag with kale, spring greens, green onions, rhubarb and asparagus! Many farmers will have healthy fruit, vegetable, and perennial plant starts so be sure to stop by before planting your garden! Stock up on local meats and cheeses, maple syrup, fermented vegetables, jams, bread and so much more. Enjoy coffee and breakfast or lunch from some amazing food trucks and bakeries as you shop. Celebrate spring at the farmers market!

21st Annual Lakewood Cemetery 21st Memorial Day Celebration

Monday, May 30th, 10:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Lakewood Cemetery, 3600 Hennepin Avenue South, Minneapolis

The day begins with a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and continues in the afternoon with live music, art classes, guided tours and other activities.

Ceremony – 10:30 a.m.
In addition to the memorable music of Robert Robinson and his gospel quartet, this year’s ceremony will feature guest speaker, David Geister, a Minneapolis-based artist, storyteller and veteran who specializes in historical art, picture book illustrations and landscape paintings. The ceremony takes place near Lakewood’s Soldiers Memorial and also features music from the Minneapolis Police Band, Honor Guard from the Minnesota National Guard, and a dove release over the audience to symbolize peace.

Live Music, Art Classes, Tours and More – 12-3 p.m.
During the afternoon, visitors to Lakewood can enjoy a variety of live music, art and tours:

  • Live music performances by SeVy, Peter Ostroushko and Dean Magraw, Jack Klatt and the Cat Swingers, Sister Species and harp/flute duo Catherine Victorsen and Jane Strauman. Concerts will take place at an outdoor stage and in Lakewood’s historic 1910 Memorial Chapel.
  • Special “Artists & Performers” guided walking tour featuring creative Minnesotans from visual artists to musicians, dancers to architects, and writers to art philanthropists (this tour will also be available on Lakewood’s mobile app)
  • Drawing activity led by the founders of The Drawing Project during which visitors can draw memories of loved ones or scenery at Lakewood
  • Poetry writing sessions led by Janna Knittel, a published poet with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota
  • Photography* tips and instruction provided by photography instructors with Minneapolis Community Education. *Visitors must bring their own camera to participate in this activity.
  • Guided trolley tours of Lakewood that explore the cemetery’s history, sculpture and gardens
  • Horse-and-carriage rides around one of Lakewood’s oldest sections where visitors can see beautiful monuments and experience how families once travelled in the cemetery
  • Special historic streetcar rides on the Como-Harriet Line, from Lakewood’s streetcar gate to Lake Harriet and back, provided by the Minnesota Streetcar Museum, $2 roundtrip (age 3 & under ride free)
  • Coffee and cookies for visitors to enjoy while listening to live music in Lakewood’s garden area near the reflection pool

New: Mobile App Tours
Visitors can download Lakewood’s mobile app to take many unique walking tours at Lakewood on Memorial Day―or any time. Tours include women’s history, African American history, World War I veterans, Vietnam War veterans, local sports & athletics leaders and architecture at Lakewood.

Rain or shine. Open to the public. All activities are free, except for the $2 streetcar rides.

Kingfield PorchFest 2016!

Thursday, June 16th, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

For anyone who missed this event last year and is wondering, “What is PorchFest?”–PorchFest is an evening of music, community, and summer! On a single summer evening, musicians will perform acoustic music at their respective homes or at a porch location donated by a neighbor, while others stroll through the neighborhood, enjoying the sounds. Information on bands and maps of the host sites will be published soon!

The Kingfield Neighborhood Association (KFNA) manages this List for the purpose of informing neighbors of events and issues that directly affect Kingfield neighborhood. This list is never shared nor sold to any other organizations. Kingfield is defined as 35W to Lyndale Avenue South and from 36th Street through 46th Street. All List recipients are invited to share neighborhood news with other members by sending messages to sarah@kingfield.org ; please indicate in the subject line that it is a message for the Kingfield E-mail List. All messages submitted by members for consideration of inclusion on the List must include complete contact information including name, phone, and email address. All messages will be screened and no partisan political messages will be posted. Ballot initiatives are not considered partisan political activity, and are permitted activities under KFNA's 501(c)(3) tax status.

The List Administrator will make the final decision as what information is posted to the Kingfield E-mail List and maintains the right to edit all messages. Many messages concerning neighborhood issues or questions we will simply answer directly, rather than posting to the entire list. Notices may also, or instead, at List Administrator's discretion be posted on the KFNA website
