38th Street Thrive!

Land Use, Equitable Engagement and Development
Join Ward 8 for the first of a four-part series of meetings focused on the vitality and growth of East 38th Street. View the Facebook event here.

In 2015 members of the East 38th Street community engaged in a series of meetings titled “The Future of East 38th Street,” hosted by then Ward 8 Council Member Elizabeth Glidden. Those meetings led to the generation of several ideas, priorities and recommendations for our communities, including the preservation of African American history, public space improvements, community ownership and wealth building, to name a few. That work carried forward through additional community engagement meetings, and community-driven projects and project developments.

Ward 8 is continuing the work with community to preserve and enhance the vitality of East 38thStreet. For this first meeting of the 38th Street Thrive! series, we will review what has been done, hear from City of Minneapolis long range planning staff about land use and discuss equitable engagement and development.

Kingfield PorchFest 2019 Planning Meeting

It’s time to start planning Kingfield’s sprawling annual music fest, fondly known as PorchFest.  This summertime event has involved over 50 musical groups at over 30 sites on a single summer evening for the past four years!

Want to help plan and market the event? We need neighbors to contact musicians, schedule events, promote the event and bands, and find a way to grow this event into a financially sustainable annual community happening.

The planning group will hold it’s first meeting on Feb 20th and then schedule meetings, as needed, until the event (typically mid-June, date will be selected at this first meeting). If you want to be attend this meeting please me directly at  (so we know we have enough room at the table) and plan on attending. Please note, if you want to order dinner the kitchen closes at 7 so please arrive before the meeting begins to order. Treats and coffee available throughout the meeting.

If you cannot attend the meeting but have ideas about how the event could work more smoothly, sustainably, differently, etc.  please feel free to contact . If you don’t want to plan but want to be involved…stay tuned until after this first meeting for the date!

Kingfield Road Repair Assessment Meeting

2018-2022 Resurfacing Map 5-8-17

The City of Minneapolis, Public Works is preparing to perform street improvements in Kingfield this summer.  These improvements will focus on the removal and replacement of the asphalt streets and will include some select curb replacement in areas that curb is missing or completely failed.  The streets involved are part of the original Kingfield residential paving area, which was originally built in 1979.  A map of the assessment/repair project area can be seen at the link above.

Along with this program there is a property assessment that will pay for a portion of the project.  This assessment is based on the uniform assessment rate, which a standard rate is applied to all properties not only in Kingfield, but to all the streets resurface in 2019. You can see a map of the assessed area here.

A neighborhood meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 13 at 6-7 PM at the MLKing Recreation Center to answer questions.   The formal public hearing at City Council will be on February 19, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in council chambers.
