Early Morning with Elizabeth: Biking and Equity

With a city-wide protected bikeway plan, an expanding list of streets with bicycle lanes, and creative plans for modifying streets to better serve walkers and bicyclists, bicycling opportunity for casual riders is on the rise in Minneapolis.

At the same time, bicycle advocates are challenged to identify how bicycling infrastructure engages the interest and attention of people of color and women and how plans for change don’t further gentrification, but benefit communities that most deserve investment. [Read more…]

March 1 is Super Tuesday — MN Caucus Day

(Registration begins at 6:30 so plan to arrive before 7 PM)

Minnesota’s DFL and Republican parties have set March 1 as the date for their 2016 precinct caucuses, also known as “Super Tuesday” because eight other states hold their primaries and caucuses on this date. The results of the Minnesota precinct caucuses are nonbinding. Delegates must proceed through higher levels of the election to gain a spot at the national conventions.

The Office of the Secretary of State has an easy to use Caucus Finder to help you know where you should go to participate. It’s a common misconception that you have to be a registered with a party (Democrat or Republican) to vote in the parties’ caucus — voters can take part regardless of registered party. In fact, you don’t even have to be registered to vote. Minnesota has same-day voter registration, so you’ll just have to bring a state-issued ID to your polling place. You also don’t have to be 18 yet to vote in the caucus, as long as you will be 18 on Election Day.

You could use the Secretary of State website to register to vote now, however, as long as you will be 18 by the upcoming election and have an ID including either a Minnesota-issued driver’s license, Minnesota ID card or the last four digits of your Social Security Number. For more information about voter eligibility or to register to vote, check out the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website.
