Thank you community artists, community volunteer support, and visiting Walldoggers! The murals are amazing works of art, memories of our neighborhood’s history, and symbols of how much can be accomplished when people work together. The powerful images that now line Nicollet Avenue are such a gift to both the Kingfield and Lyndale neighborhoods, that words cannot express how proud I am to be a part of this project and support this work of the community.

More Mural Designs
To help get everyone excited we wanted to send out a second batch of mural designs. One of the great things about this project is that all of these murals will be painted in 4 days.
You can see pictures of these and the other sites, find out more about the artists, and see what the themes for each mural will be by checking out our website.
Fun Ways to Help Out!– Here are a couple of simple ways to help the Walldogs out!
Walldogs Raffle
To help raise funds for the project and to show off some great stuff from our local business community, we’re holding a Walldogs Raffle. The grand prize will be a wine cellar worth at least $800 of wine and beer donated by community members.
So grab your favorite bottle of wine or that six pack of special micro-brew that you think everyone should try, sign it, and drop it off at the LNA Office (3537 Nicollet Avenue) - which also happens to be the same place you can buy your raffle tickets for $5 a piece.
Second prize will be $200 in cash. Check out the raffle page on the website to see more great raffle prizes.
Tell a Friend
As much fun as this project is going to be, wouldn’t it be more fun to help out with a friend. Help us out by inviting your friends and family to join you in taking part in this great community event.
The Walldogs on Nicollet is a joint project of the Lyndale and Kingfield Neighborhood Associations. We genuinely hope you will help make this project a success and our neighborhoods a better place to live.

E-mail Notice: Fire Destroys Walldog Mural, Curran’s Benefit, Redevelopment Meeting On 3700 Nicollet
Filed Under 3700 nicollet, art, e-mail notice | 1 Comment
Kingfield E-Mail Notice
Feb. 21, 2008
Content:
1) Fire destroys the Walldogs Fischer Grocery Mural
2) Curran’s Restaurant benefit for returning troops Mon., Feb. 25, 4 pm- 8 pm.
3) KFNA Redevelopment Meeting, Wed. Feb. 27, 7 PM, MLK Park
1) I have received a handful of e-mails today asking why the building at 34th and Nicollet displaying the Walldog on Nicollet Fischer Grocery mural was demolished. In case some of you missed the news, there was a small fire at the building yesterday morning and a much larger one around noon. The building was destroyed by the fire and the structure, including the mural, was razed sometime during the night.
Those of us active in the Walldogs on Nicollet project are stunned to have this beautiful piece of public art suddenly gone. Especially since the concept of the work, as tangible art that is part of our daily lives, is all around us in both the image and the theme of our annual community art show, Living Art, which happens in just one month. We are still in the process of notifying those individuals who put in over 1000-volunteer hours to plan and create the mural, as well as reframing our thinking about what it means to have the mural gone as we continue planning for the larger installation of 8 murals along Nicollet this July.
On a personal note, the mural was painted on the weekend that Mark Loesch was murdered. The two events will be forever mixed in my mind because so many of us gathered to talk about the tragedy of Mark’s death while we worked side-by-side to create something beautiful. The mural symbolized for many of us, if I may speak for others too, of what is good in our community and what we can come of us working together with a common vision.

If you have questions related to the Walldogs on Nicollet please feel free to contact me, Sarah Linnes-Robinson, KFNA Executive Director, sarah@kingfield.org or 612.823.5980.
2) Curran’s Restaurant, 4201 Nicollet Avenue South, is having a benefit for returning troops and their families on Monday, February 25th, from 4 pm to 8 pm. A donation of 25% of our sales from that time will be given to “Tickets for Troops” (www.tix4troops.org). The money goes towards a “night on the town” for troops and their families, such as movie tickets, Guthrie Theater, Twins baseball, Wild hockey, dinner theater tickets and more.
If you have questions call Dennis Curran at 822.5327.
3) Kingfield Neighborhood Association Redevelopment Committee Meeting, Wednesday, February 27, 7 PM, MLK
The Redevelopment Committee has spent many months researching the potential impacts of the proposed development of a 42-until supportive housing facility for homeless young adults at 3700 Nicollet. This meeting concludes the research phase with presentations from Tom Thompson of CCP SAFE related to current crime in this area and recommendations for designing the building to be safer for the tenants and surrounding residents.
Following Q & A related to the crime presentations, the committee will open the meeting for a public forum and hear two-minute speeches by neighbors interested in expressing their insights, recommendations for further research, and/or conclusions.
The final portion of the meeting the Redevelopment Committee will discuss a draft of a Community Benefits Agreement they have prepared related to the project.
All interested neighbors, property owners, and business owners are welcome to attend this meeting. Questions can be directed to Sarah Linnes-Robinson at sarah@kingfield.org.
The Kingfield Neighborhood Association (KFNA) manages this List for the purpose of informing neighbors of events and issues that directly affect Kingfield neighborhood. Kingfield is defined as 35W to Lyndale Avenue South and from 36th Street through 46th Street. All List recipients are invited to share neighborhood news with other members by sending messages to sarah@kingfield.org; please indicate in the subject line that it is a message for the Kingfield E-mail List.

Living Art Art Show
Filed Under art | Leave a Comment
The Third Annual Community Art Show, Living Art, will be held on March 22nd. Local artists and community members are invited to create 2-dimensional or 3D art that captures the spirit of ‘Living Art’. Whether growing, changing, moving, or residing in the public eye and thus subject to individual interpretation, art lives among us and influences us. Artists are encouraged to be flexible in their interpretation of the concept “living art”, and how it is incorporated in their work.
Artwork does not need to be completed and delivered until March 15th, 2008. Registrations to include your artwork in the show will be accepted on-line until March 5th at the Submit Artwork link. Registration assures you a place in the show and entitles you to complimentary ticket. You do not need to know the title or details of the artwork you are submitting to register.
Selected pieces will be exhibited at Anodyne from March 5th-22nd. All art works submitted will be sold at a silent auction held March 22nd, 2008, 7-10 PM at Rau + Barber, 4244 Nicollet Avenue South.
All submitting artists will receive one ticket to this event. The art show and silent auction includes appetizers artfully crafted by Scott Pampuch, of the Corner Table and Theresa Lien, of Anodyne. Wine and beer will also be available for purchase throughout the evening. Additional tickets are $10, in advance, via the Purchase Tickets link, or $20 at the door.
Auction proceeds from ‘Living Art’ are split 50/50 between the artists and the Walldogs on Nicollet, a project of the Kingfield and Lyndale neighborhood associations. In the case that an artist chooses to donate their artwork to KFNA rather than split the sale, the artist may write-off the value of their artwork, as the law allows, as a donation to KFNA, a non-profit community development organization, to be used for the Walldogs on Nicollet project.
Walldogs on Nicollet is a joint-project of the Lyndale (LNA) and Kingfield Neighborhood Associations (KFNA) neighborhood associations. The project will involve local and national artists coming together to paint 6-10 murals along Nicollet Avenue from Lake Street to 46th Street from July 24th to 27th, 2008. This project is being done to increase foot traffic on Nicollet Avenue, prevent graffiti, and build stronger relationships between local businesses and residents…besides assisting in creating some really awesome art! More information on this project can be found at www.walldogs.lyndale.org.
Living Art builds on the 2006 “Art is the Key” art show and auction, for KFNA believes that art is the key to community. Living Art will help our community live and thrive by bringing artists and neighbors together in the creation and appreciation of art.

Artist and Site Selection:
Debate started about who leads walls-Walldoggers and/or locals. Tabled due to time to separate meeting between Bersin, Hinds, and Linnes-Robinson. Separate meeting on the topic resulted in this compromise: Walldoggers will lead most projects. An RFQ will not be posted for locals but if any come to our attention with exterior mural and group experience, we may interview them for their interest and possible leadership of a design and site. Debate also occurred about providing a travel stipend for lead artists. This matter will be decided by December when we will confirm with our artists.
Artist and Site Timeline and Actions:
Carole will solicit firmer commitments now from Walldoggers that have tentatively expressed interest.
Mark will provide packet about project including possible wall samples for sites that can be sent to potentially interested Walldoggers.
A decision will be made regarding travel stipends for lead artists by December.
Desire is to have artists selected and confirmed for at least 6 sites (minimum number of murals desired) before Christmas. Any others would be solidified as we finalize sites in January-early February ’08. Artists and walls all decided and used for promo in March.
Criteria for sites was also brainstormed. Although it should be refined it is, as follows.
1st Determinant:
graffiti
visible
location–both stretching through the two hoods but also some grouping with other murals
business in compliance with city code
attitude of building and business owner
2nd Determinant:
smoothness of wall
willingness of building and /or owner to:
pay for wall prep arranged by us
provide a cash contribution
invest in the building and /or business long term
light the finished mural and their building
support the artists during the project with:
bathrooms
food
water
visits

Walldog Steering Committee
MINUTES
7/11/07
Present: Mark Hinds, Sarah Linnes-Robinson, Ray Carron, Carole Bersin, and Karen Heegaard
Presentation by Bersin on meet in Algoma. Key points:
Illinois meet planned for September 08 which means we will be in July ‘08
Some Walldoggers expressed interest in Minneapolis meet—potential project leads identified
Walldoggers getting more “official”—creating a packet of materials for “what it takes to bring the Walldogs to your town”. Insurance specified as a concern by Walldoggers, as well as transportation costs for lead artists.
Algoma was good model of community working alongside Walldoggers—need to explore how this was achieved more—Hinds will discuss this and other notes with Dave, the Algoma organizer.
Decision:
Walldogs on Nicollet will meet weekend before Hudson in July 2008.
Linnes-Robinson presented the event proposal for 2007. Since writing up the task list earlier in the day she had been having second–thoughts about the capacity of the Walldog Steering Committee to pull-off the street dance. At her request, it was agreed by those present to remove this event from the 2007 list and shoot for it in 2008. Instead a “kegger” may be held at Hinds house as a fundraiser for the Walldogs, and we can do something more simple on site to encourage people to come view the mural in progress such as scope ice cream or serve drinks. The group was enthusiastic about the Harvest Breakfast idea (Linnes-Robinson will pursue seeing if this is compliance with the Farmers’ Market rules) and the Eating for Art event. The Event Group will craft a request for businesses and solicit participation.
A brief conversation was held regarding the La Princessa mural and its trolley theme. Linnes-Robinson shared photos of other Walldog murals that captured train images and Hinds referred to a new book that was just published about trolleys. Bersin will have a draft design by July 23 to present to La Princessa’s owner. If approved, Linnes-Robinson will take it to the City and it can be used for promotional materials (including both organizations newsletters) if finalized by August 6.
The meeting was adjourned.

Walldog Minutes
6/7/07
Attending:
Karen Heegard, Sandy Parnell, Carole Bersin, Ray Carron, Sarah Linnes-Robinson, and Mark Hinds
Updates:
La Princessa (34th and Nicollet) has been secured as a site. We will work towards painting this site in September ’07 as a teaser for the larger event in ’08.
Carole talked about the upcoming Walldog Meet in Algooma, Wisconsin the weekend of the June 21st. She is attending and planning on holding a “forum” with other Walldoggers about the differences in holding an urban rather than a small-town meet, their benefits or detriments of piggy-backing on Hudson, and their interest in participating in our meet. She will have a decision about if it will work to piggyback on Hudson in July ’08, or if we will move ahead with our stand-alone event in September at our meeting in July.
Mark presented the comments that he heard regarding our proposal at the MRAC review yesterday. The proposal was generally unfavorably received and he expects it will be turned down. Some of the comments included: the festival needs to be more fleshed out, what is the subject matter of the murals and how is it defined, how will the project be evaluated, how will volunteers be engaged, is there artistic value to the work. MRAC will have another round of funding next spring where we can be better prepared to answer these questions.
The fundraising/marketing committee met and began fleshing out the message of the materials that will be produced. The themes of the event are 1) Community Building 2) Art is a community value, and 3) There is a public benefit from the murals being part of the community and seeing them be created. The thread that needs to be woven throughout all of these is “diversity is a value”.
We brainstormed duties for Volunteers including:
Check-in, serving lunch, delivering snacks and water, providing host homes, cleaning up, as well as those that paint.
Both the fundraising/marketing group and the event/volunteers group will meet before the next large group meeting. The large group was tentatively scheduled for Wednesday July 11 at 5 PM.
Minutes provided by Linnes-Robinson, KFNA Executive Director, 6/7/07.
