Okay, I really intended to get this post up days ago, or at least sometime before Sunday (today), because today is the day of the weekly Kingfield Farmers Market, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. at 43rd and Nicollet Ave. S., but life got hectic, and I had to go to Chicago for a conference, and so here it is, 9:20 a.m. on a Sunday morning. So I’m going to do a quick post and then jump on my bike and ride over to the market for breakfast.

The Kingfield Market is pretty small, in terms of the number of vendors and shoppers, but the gastronomic batting average is pretty high: both Rustica, the terrific artisan bakery at 46th and Bryant, and the Grand Cafe, at 38th and Grand (one of my favorite restaurants), have stalls at the market, selling bread, cookies and pastries (UPDATE: the Grand Cafe will be there twice a month); and Clancy’s Meats…

Kingfield Farmers’ Market Committee
Tuesday, February 26, 2008
7:00-8:30pm
Grand Cafe

Attendance: Melinda Ludwiczak, David Nicholson, Scott Pampuch, David Brauer, Jobylynn Sassily-James, Donna Viland (new to KFNA may assist with grant research and writing)
KFNA Staff: Joanna Hallstrom

Agenda Review and Announcements: Nicholson reviewed the agenda no items changed. Nicholson reported that the KFNA board was not able to approve the market coordinator job description without a budget. He passed a budget around for review; no changes were suggested by the KFMC. The 08-market budget and the job description will be submitted together to the board for an email vote so that the job description can be posted ASAP.

Discussion Items
Market Coordinator job description/posting plan: Brauer and Nicholson already posted the market coordinator position via the Minneapolis Issues list etc believing that it had been finalized. Hallstrom has received two inquiries -Sheila Daleny, former ED for Longfellow Community Council and Sharon Nygren (experience in development work, special events, environmental education, has a small organic landscaping business etc). Both interested parties asked about compensation. The group had wanted to leave this open until interviews. Hallstrom requested permission to give the guaranteed hourly rate of $15/hr with the explanation that it is the goal of the committee to expand the market coordinator position through development work (i.e. securing grants etc.) The committee agreed on this and Hallstrom or Linnes-Robinson will notify the interested applicant.

Kingfield Farmers’ Market Committee
Monday, January 28, 2008
12:00-1:00
Corner Table

Attendance: Melinda Ludwigzack, David Nicholson, Scott Pampouch, David Brauer,
KFNA Staff: Sarah Linnes-Robinson, Joanna Hallstrom

Announcements:
Mary Hunter withdrew her commitment as a KFMC board member; do to family and business priorities. Hunter confirmed that Grand Café will be a 08 vendor.

Joanna S. Hallstrom announced that she will be taking maternity leave in August and possibly not returning to KFNA.

Housekeeping Items:
1. Whether or not to join the MN Farmers’ Market Association: The committee decided to hold on becoming a member of MFMA ($60) this year but to invest funds in sending the new market coordinator to an MFMA conference if it was found to be beneficial. MFMA published The Farmers’ Market Manual for Minnesota ($55). Hallstrom will try to find a copy that the committee can review before decides to purchase a copy.

After discussion the committee felt that MFMA membership, although beneficial (i.e. included in an on line market listing etc) is not a necessity or priority to this year.  Membership will be revisited for 09.

KFNA Staff: Sarah Linnes-Robinson, Joanna Hallstrom

KFNA Board Update:
Linnes-Robinson reported that the KFNA board voted to add the Kingfield Farmers’ Market Committee as an official committee of the KFNA board.  The KFNA board also approved the access of NRP funding designated for the farmers’ market in 08 and 09 for use in 08. The total amount is $11,000.  Linnes-Robinson stated that these funds should be seen as a last resource since there are always available for the market. She stated that the market committee should make it a priority to secure other funding first.
The NRP funds available do not include KFNA staff time that can be allocated to the market in 08.
Funding for the market coordinator position, however, needs to be either raised or paid for from the NRP funds.

Committee Details:
Hallstrom walked the new committee through the KFNA board description of a committee. A committee list will be submitted to the KFNA Board in December for approval. Each committee of the board needs to have a board member on it. The committee still needs to identify an official board rep. At this time board members, David Brauer, Mary Hunter and Jobylynn Sassily James are on this committee but no one can commit to being a long-term KFNA boar representative. The committee will try to recruit a board member to represent the market at the next KFNA annual meeting and board elections. Jobylynn volunteered to be the board liaison since she is at most board meetings but doesn’t know if she can be at all the market meetings. David Brauer, KFNA board president, has committed to being on the committee through the transitional period.
