Minneapolis continues to be a hotbed of creative activity, according to new data that examines arts jobs, consumer spending and revenue of arts organizations. New data in the Creative Vitality Index 2014 Update shows that the Minneapolis area arts sector has moved up from sixth to the fifth strongest when compared to other top metropolitan areas.Â
This is the second time this data has been compiled for Minneapolis, and it places the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area fifth nationally behind that of Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles; New York and Boston. Â In 2013, the creative sector (consumer retail sales in the arts plus nonprofit revenues) pumped $831 million into the Minneapolis economy. This is a 13 percent increase from $700 million in 2011. Â The creative sector is a significant piece of Minneapolis employment; it employs nearly 20,000 workers, making up 5 percent of all jobs in Minneapolis proper.
