Fried Green Tomatoes and More!

A Hands-on Gardening Workshop

Tomato season is upon us. Learn about different types of tomatoes (we’re growing some awesome green ones here at MLK Garden!), good planting practices, and more. We’ll also check on our dried herbs to see how they are doing.

Before the lesson we’ll continue our bean, zucchini, eggplant, and herb harvest as well as check on our cucumbers.

Everyone is welcome. Feel free to drop in and bring your questions, tend the soil, and meet neighbors, whether weekly or whenever you can!

The mission of the MLK Donation Garden, located on the northern side of the King Park Building at 4055 Nicollet, is to connect neighbors and grow food for our community. Neighbors gather every Tuesday from 5:30-6:30 PM to tend the vegetables in the boxes at the northern side of the MLK Recreation Center and discuss a weekly topic. The food we grow in 2019 will be donated to The Aliveness Project (located at 3808 Nicollet), but the knowledge you go home with is yours to keep!

Boomerang Bags, Tech Dump, & Talk Trash with MPLS Solid Waste Recycling

Boomerang Bags Minneapoliswill be created and given away at the market by volunteers Rachel Breen (Kingfield Social Justice Artist) and Felicity Britton (Boomerang Bags Minneapolis Chapter Founder). Come see the process of creating a beautiful reusable bag on a treadle sewing machine! Bags are given away free at select stores for people to reuse over and over or borrow and return them if they forget their own reusable bags. Interested in starting a Kingfield chapter? Come talk to us at the Market!

Also bring you most confusing recycling and composting questions (and actual items!) with you to the market to ask Minneapolis expert Kellie Kish what how to best process specific items.

Bring your old technology to the market and DUMP IT! Tech Dump, an electronics recycling non-profit, will be collecting cell phones, tablets and charging cords. Not only will you be able to safely and responsibly dispose of your old gear, you’ll also be supporting employment opportunities through a local nonprofit. To learn more about this organization and the amazing work they do, check out their website, here: https://www.techdump.org/who-we-are/.To learn more about us and this event, check out our website here: http://neighborhoodrootsmn.org/tech-dump/

2019 Beloved Community Event

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park Legacy Council will host a celebration at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park. This free celebration will include great music, food trucks, and children’s activities. Enjoy a day of music and fun in the park to help celebrate our community. Free face painting, crafts, rides, and games to entertain the entire family. Ice cream and food will be available for a small fee.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park was renamed from Nicollet Field in 1968 to Dr. Martin Luther King Park to honor the civil rights leader who was assassinated earlier that year. Based on recommendations by the Advisory Task Force, the name of the park is now Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, ensuring the legacy of Dr. King will be preserved.

And right now, that togetherness matters.

On Sunday, February 8, neighbors will gather for Kingfield Empty Bowls—sharing soup, choosing handmade bowls, and supporting local nonprofits fighting food injustice and increasing housing access in our community.

It’s about sharing space, being together, and taking care of one another in small but meaningful ways.

We’d love to see you there.
