Lighting Up Lakewood

The Lakewood Cemetery Lantern Lighting Celebration, now in its third year, is a public memorial event that offers guests a unique way to remember their loved ones. The celebratory event features live music, food trucks, and activities, and culminates with a special nondenominational ceremony at sunset, in which candlelit lanterns are released on Lakewood’s lake while the names of loved ones are read aloud.

Come early for the activities, which will include

  • Self-guided tours of the cemetery (via brochures and mobile app); Lakewood’s Memorial Chapel and Garden Mausoleum, open from 3 to 5 PM
  • Historic streetcar rides to and from Lake Harriet provided by the Minnesota Streetcar Museum ($2 round trip)
  • Lantern decorating from 5-7 p.m. (decorating supplies provided; however, a $5 donation is suggested for each lantern, and please register online at LakewoodCemetery.org to insure adequate supplies)
  • Lantern release ceremony at sunset (roughly 7 to 8 PM).

The event has grown significantly over the past two years, and we are eager to welcome the public back to Lakewood for another wonderful evening this September 16th.

Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble

The Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble (http://twincitiestrumpetensemble.weebly.com/) present a free Sunday afternoon concert at the historic Judson Memorial Baptist Church in South Minneapolis.

Fans of the 24 trumpet ensemble have come to expect the obligatory opening fanfare at concerts, but then are astonished at the range and virtuosity of both the musical selections and the players – pop, classical, jazz. A Twin Cities Trumpet Ensemble concert is a musical feast not to be missed!

Over 100 years old, the beautiful Judson sanctuary has been called one of the finest church sound-boxes in the Twin Cities. General seating. Donations gratefully accepted..

35W Construction Information: Q & A Options

Did you know that I-35W between 43rd Street and 15th Street was constructed in 1967?  That the average daily traffic in 2013 was 198,500, and is projected to be 257,700 within the next 20 years? Beginning in mid-August, MN DOT will begin a four year project to improve the life, safety and sustainability of the road as well as improving pedestrian and bicycle access and travel options on local streets.

Want to learn more?  Here are a few ways you can find out additional information about the project:

  • Attend an Open House on August 17th from 5-7pm at Hope Community’s Children’s Village Center building (611 E. Franklin Ave);
  • Stop by the Kingfield Farmers Market (4310 Nicollet Ave S) on August 20th between 8:30am and 1pm to speak to a project representative;

Improv (& Pizza!) in the Garden

–A KFNA Community Outdoor Oven Event!

Kingfield is a neighborhood of many talents and some of the funniest professional improvisers in Minnesota live right here. And this Thursday, they’re putting on a live show at the Kingfield Community Garden!

Join us for an evening of improv comedy theater, pizza, and more. Six of our neighbors, who also happen to be professional improvisers, will perform a live, unscripted show that’ll be fun for the whole family. Performers include members of the civics-inspired improv comedy company, The Theater of Public Policy, alumni of Dudley Rigg’s Brave New Workshop, and current Comedy Sportz cast members.

The cast will do classic short-form improv games, similar to what you might have seen on Who’s Line Is It Anyway. There will be lots of opportunity for audience participation and it’ll all be inspired by the people and stories of Kingfield!

The cast includes:
Tane Danger
Brandon Boat
Heather Meyer
Joshua Will
Max Beyer
Jen Scott (if the baby she’s due to have this Friday doesn’t arrive early…)

It’ll be a perfectly hilarious evening in the garden enjoyed while you are consuming delicious oven baked pizza created by your own KFNA Board of Directors! Donation requested at $10 per person (sliding scale possible) to benefit both the community garden, and the construction of a new woodshed to store our oven logs.
