Celebrate Earth Day 2017 at MLK Park

Either walk to the park collecting trash along the way from our neighborhood to leave at the park for collection, or stop by the park and pick up a bag and gloves and help spring clean the site. Either way, join us to celebrate Earth Day!

This year, we’re excited to announce a partnership with Hennepin County Master Gardeners; from 9:30 AM – noon Master Gardeners will be available to answer all of your gardening questions. Information on a their plant sale, with both vegetables and native plants, as well as contact information for Master Gardeners in our area will be shared. Additionally, Master Gardeners will be sharing information about their Donation Garden Project with the Aliveness Project, also located at MLK Park.

Also, get your garden started with super local compost! KFNA is working with the MN Plate to Garden Compost Program and will be distributing bags of compost from the site that receives organics recycling from our community. You can complete the loop of growing food, eating food, and then turning food scraps back in to soil to grow food again! For a donation benefiting KFNA and MLK Park, you can shovel a 20 lb. bag of local compost to take back to your garden (limit 4 bags per household, please).

We look forward to seeing you and to announcing further partnerships for our upcoming Earth Day!

Breaking Ground at the Community Donation Garden at MLK Park

Hatha Yoga 4:30-5:30 PM / Garden Prep 5:30- 6:30 PM

All events located outdoors, northside of the MLK Rec Center, 4055 Nicollet

Please join us next week for our first garden meeting at MLK Park! As in the first season, 100% of the veggies we grow will benefit the food shelf and meal program at The Aliveness Project.

Mara, a wonderful AP volunteer, will lead an optional all-levels hatha yoga class near the garden site from 4:30-5:30*. The garden meeting will run from 5:30 to 6:30pm.

*In the event of rain the yoga class will take place at AP (two blocks north of the park) from 4:30-5:15pm, leaving plenty of time to walk or drive to the park by 5:30.

Come ready to stretch your limbs, help prep the beds/containers, and plant some cooler-weather selections. We will also hand out materials for those who wish to participate in MLK Park’s Earth Day event on Saturday April 22nd from 9:30-noon.

This garden is a joint project of The Aliveness Project, MLK Park, and the Kingfield.

Community Connections Conference: – Your Voice, Your City: CommUnity

The conference is FREE, kid-friendly, and includes an incredible lunch.  Registration will close March 24.

You are invited to the sixth annual Community Connections Conference – Your Voice, Your City: CommUnity! The conference is free. All are welcome to make their voices heard; participate in interactive sessions, robust learning and exhibits; and enjoy a delicious cultural lunch.

The Conference will feature an opportunity to participate in Minneapolis 2040, the City’s Comprehensive Plan update. Minneapolis 2040 will be the City’s 20-year vision to direct the physical development of the city into the future. Participants can find out what’s happened so far in the planning process and discuss with City staff and your neighbors how to grow the city in health, equity, and opportunity.  Design a paper movie (called a crankie) with artists, use constraints and tradeoffs to create more housing choices on a game board, and join a variety of conversations about what role the City can play in making Minneapolis a more equitable city.

There are sessions dedicated to gentrification and housing segregation. Both sessions will include presentations from researchers at the University of Minnesota followed by discussion on how the Comprehensive Plan and City policy should be address these issues.  Public Works will also be discussing equity in the new 20 year Streets Funding Plan.  You can find more information on all the sessions here.

And right now, that togetherness matters.

On Sunday, February 8, neighbors will gather for Kingfield Empty Bowls—sharing soup, choosing handmade bowls, and supporting local nonprofits fighting food injustice and increasing housing access in our community.

It’s about sharing space, being together, and taking care of one another in small but meaningful ways.

We’d love to see you there.
