As you may be aware the northside of Minneapolis is facing the highest crime that residents have seen in many years. The Jordan neighborhood, where JACC is located, is under siege with gun violence. Jordan residents report incidents of violence, on a daily basis, many lives have been lost, families are grieving and suffering due to gun violence. We continue to ponder what is the long term impact and what does it take to end gun violence.

Many Jordan community residents and block club leaders, along with the JACC board of Directors, staff of various offices, such as the mayor’s office, the chief of police, US Atty General and the DOJ have worked together to coordinate a community forum to address the surge of gun violence that has taken over our neighborhoods and the entire city of Minneapolis.

This will be a virtual meeting, via zoom, and a facilitator will guide and lead the conversation. It will be a panel discussion to include residents, the mayor, chief of police and the US Attorney General. We anticipate there will be many questions, we will ask individuals to submit questions in advance, prior to the meeting. Questions will also be taken during the meeting, via the chat format. 

 

KFNA meets monthly and neighbors are welcome to join the conversation. Community Forum starts each meeting where you can bring up an issue or ask a question, or stay for the entire meeting to learn about neighborhood projects and work that the KFNA Board is doing in the community. This month KFNA is discussing the future of our community-based organization, both financially and  philosophically.

Like other organizations, over the last year KFNA has experienced unprecedented challenges and disruptions to the way we operate.  COVID-19, the killing of George Floyd and the funding uncertainty from the City have, and will require us to respond and adapt to a new reality.  This new norm of uncertainty will require more deliberate action, more strategic planning and more support from the KFNA board and the community as a whole.  If we are to continue to support and build community within our neighborhood KFNA must define our mission moving forward, be nimble in the way we operate and develop the mechanisms for funding that work.

Over the last few months the KFNA executive team has been discussing and wrestling with these “big” questions.  Through these discussions it is clear that the answers are not simple and that the path forward must be developed through a collaborative process between KFNA Board Members, KFNA Staff and the Community.

The Kingfield Neighborhood Association Redevelopment Committee had the opportunity to review the developer’s proposal for 15 West 37^th Street and the committee is holding a special committee meeting via Zoom to allow interested neighbors to learn about the project and ask questions of the developer (and Kingfield residents), Jim and Faith Kumon of Heirloom Properties, LLC.

Although it would be the committee’s preference to hold this meeting in person, due to COVID safety procedures, the meeting will be held virtually.  Heirloom Properties has provided a project summary, and KFNA also welcomes you to submit project questions BEFORE the meeting so answers can be covered in the presentation.
